Friday 20th September
Concert I: Light of the World
1pm Malling Abbey, West Malling, ME19 6JX
The Marian Consort explores sublime music from England’s turbulent 17th
century. Doleful works from the dying embers of the English Renaissance by
Byrd and Tomkins are contrasted with the Italianate brilliance of the ‘English
Orpheus’, Henry Purcell. Interspersed with these are John Woolrich’s settings
of three texts by 18th Century poet Christopher Smart who was born at
Fairlawne, Shipbourne. Budding singers will join the Marian Consort in a sideby-side performance of Purcell - Remember not. Bookending the programme,
are works of glowing luminosity by Deborah Pritchard.
